THE JANUARY 1983 N.Z.S.I. SUMMER SCHOOL

There are still a few vacancies for attendance at what appears to be going to be a valuable experience in the life of a budding violinist. Late registrations will be accepted until 31st December 1982. Some cello tuition will be available on request.

The facilities at Homai College are spot on. In addition to those previously published, there are five-bed dormitories for the children, some family rooms, and some separate private rooms for teachers. The accommodation fee includes linen, and all main meals.

Anyone who has not a copy of the October Newsletter and Enrolment Form, please write or phone the Institute.

Participants will need to supply:
i) own towels
ii) 2 lots/batches of cookies/cakes and
1 x 100g jar/refill pack instant coffee or 1 x 30-box teabags

On arrival at the venue, meet in the Hall at 9.00am.

REPEAT TAPE LOAN SERVICE

The Repeat Tape Library has expanded such that Violin and Piano tapes are now held separately. Teachers are requested to contact directly the appropriate person:

Violin tapes:
Mary Allan
15 Beale Street
Hamilton
Ph. 395-146

Piano tapes:
Christine East
62 Fifth Ave
Hamilton
Ph. 59-522

Please remember that:
a) Tapes are to be hired out only to financial members.
b) Teachers should keep a record of the kinds of tapes they have hired—i.e., Piano (P) or Violin (V)—and use both numbers on the tapes.

Example:
Piano: /P6/21
Tape No. 6
21st copy of tape 6

Violin: /V2/16
Tape No. 2
16th copy of tape 2

c) An example of a teacher’s tape record might look like this, with a separate page allocated to each tape level:

Tape 1 – Twinkles Page 1

| Pupil’s Name | Amt. Paid (to teacher) | Tape No. | Date Issued | Date Ret’d | Parent’s Signature |

|—————|————————|———-|————-|————|——————–|

d) Payments collected by teachers from pupils should be forwarded in a lump sum to either Mary Allan (Violin) or Christine East (Piano). Cheques should be made payable to N.Z.S.I.

e) When returning tapes, please ensure they are in their correct boxes.

f) Teachers are requested to supply the names of pupils for whom the tapes are being hired.

PARENTS: For your peace of mind, the tabs are being removed from the tapes so that mischievous fingers will not cause inadvertent recordings.

TIPS FOR TAPES

  1. Clean tape deck heads regularly with a cotton bud dipped in ethyl alcohol. Improves sound quality!
  2. If your recorder has chewed up a tape, it is essential that every little piece of tape is removed, as they may draw another tape into a massive tangle.
  3. Use a plastic-coated knitting needle to persuade a tangled tape out of your recorder, as metal needles/implements can damage the magnetically recorded sound waves on the tape. Patience and gentle movements of the stop/eject button and gentle tugging are required to ease the tape from around the heads—there should be no knots or loose ends when it is freed, and it can be rewound onto the cassette.
  4. An unevenly wound tape rubbing against the sides of a cassette can cause tape tangles—this can be alleviated by slapping the cassette onto a firm surface (e.g., hard-covered book).

HAPPY LISTENING – GOOD LEARNING

CHIT CHAT

Amnesty International (Hamilton) held a fundraising concert two months ago, at which some “Suzuki” pupils played. Amnesty International thanks those children—Alison Galloway, Graham Harris, Hagen Kerr, and Kathryn West (violins) and Shu-Yun Pai (piano).

The Japan Society also thanks the large group of violinists and two pianists who gave a performance at their Social earlier this month.

We farewell Mayme Earle, who flies out from N.Z. on December 16th for a study year in Matsumoto. We hope you gain all you expect from your trip, Mayme, and more, and we look forward to your safe return.

HELP!!
We need some people to help with the addressing and enveloping of the Newsletter, a job which takes at present 3–4 hours every six weeks or so. It could take a lot less. Offers? Contact the Editor.

DR. SUZUKI SAYS…

“Our purpose of education is not to produce professional musicians, but to make fine people who have high hearts, wonderful sensitivity, and fine ability.”

FOR THE CHILDREN

One child asked his teacher for the words to “French Children’s Song”—this is the only feedback I’ve had about them. Do you want any more after this? Parents, are you using them? Children, would you like a page of the Newsletter devoted to you—games, riddles, information, and things like that? Over the holidays write, or ring me, and I’ll try to give you what you want.

CUCKOO (Jan Kitchen’s pupils)
Cuckoo, cuckoo sings from the tree top
Cuckoo, cuckoo where are you flying
Cuckoo, cuckoo sings from the tree
Cuckoo, cuckoo please do come home.

FRENCH CHILDREN’S SONG
Hey hey dee do
