Many capable musicians owe their start and developing prowess as performers to training from teachers using the methods espoused by the late Japanese music pedagogue, Dr Shinichi Suzuki. The success achieved by local students will be celebrated in a public concert in the Havelock North Function Centre at 2pm this Sunday. Under the auspices of the Hawke’s Bay Branch of the NZ Suzuki Institute, the programme will feature performances by pianists, violinists, violists, cellists and flautists at a wide level of achievement.
Suzuki was at first a selftaught young adult violinist before studying in Germany and developing his philosophy throughout the latter part of the 20th century, which had a huge influence on the way children were taught to play musical instruments from the earliest possible age. He spoke of ‘‘the ability of all children to learn things well, especially in the right environment, and of developing the heart and building the character of music students through their music education’’. ■ Door sales. Admission adults $5, children $2.
