FIFTY budding musicians ranging in age from pre-school to high school will come together to entertain in the annual Suzuki Concert this Sunday.
Organiser Hamilton Tammy Wong said the Suzuki Method was international and in Hamilton concentrated on three instruments – piano, cello and violin.
‘‘Children learn from a very young age and parents can attend lessons with their children and help them practise at home.
‘‘The students do really well and often go on to perform in other events such as the Hamilton Competitions Society and further into national and international performance.’’
Among the young musicians taking part this Sunday will be Jared Ng, 8, who plays violin. Jared is now playing his third violin – a one-eight sized instrument and follows his older brother Daniel, 14, who plays cello and sister Emi, 11, also plays violin.
Maayan Levi, 9, also started learning with a scaled-down instrument and is now playing her second, a half-size cello. Maayan followed her elder brother Yotam, 20, who is now in his second year of music studies at Waikato University.
Sam Strahan, 9, is a student at Horsham Downs School and has been studying piano for the past three years.
Mum Jo Strahan said the Suzuki method of teaching music was similar to learning a language and the tunes Sam was learning were played as background in the home to enable him to become familiar with the music.
Sam enjoys playing tunes including the Hungarian Folk Song by Bartok and Short Story by Lichner.
Ms Strahan said as the Suzuki concert was open to the public it provided a wonderful opportunity for parents to see children perform work from simple to advanced pieces.
The concert will be held at the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts, Waikato university, Sunday August 28, 3pm.
