Children as young as 3 years old will showcase their violin talent when they parade through the Rotorua city centre on Saturday.
The Suzuki Twinkle Parade will include about 15 to 20 children, aged from 3 to 10, parading violin songs for one hour, starting from the City Focus.
The activity is part of a six-day long music camp organised by the Hamilton Branch NZ Suzuki Institute, which started today at Keswick Christian Camp in Holdens Bay.
Hamilton Branch NZ Suzuki Institute president and camp organiser Tammy Wong said about 85 students were taking part in the annual camp, which involved learning the violin and cello. She said students came from as far as the South Island and Australia.
‘‘ Our goal is to enhance children’s musical skills to a high standard as young as possible,’’ she said. ‘‘The parade will showcase our youngest talent to the city as part of one of their activi- ties. However, all students will be working hard towards the public concert on Monday.’’
Ms Wong encouraged the public to go along and support the young talent and said parents interested in signing their children up were welcome to look throughout the camp.
The Hamilton Branch NZ Suzuki Institute is one of a number of branches in New Zealand, with more than 120 teachers and 2500 students studying a range of instruments including violin, cello, piano, flute and guitar.
New Zealand students have won national and international competitions and make up a number of local and national orchestras.
The Suzuki Twinkle Parade is free and will be held at Rotorua’s City Focus from 2.30pm to 3.30pm on Saturday.
The public concert will be held on Monday at the Rotorua Convention Centre from 6pm with a gold coin donation.
