NZ Suzuki Journal Summer 1999 – Hugh McCaffrey Obituary
Hugh McCaffrey BDS
16 June 1952 to 28 November 1998
The McCaffrey family came to New Zealand approximately ten years ago from Ireland. I am told that Hugh initially thought they might live in Huntly, but on traveling a bit further south, he discovered Taupo, and it was here they made their home and set up a dental practice. Being the keen fisherman he was, Lake Taupo and its tributary rivers were the recreational dream special to the lakes of central North Island. Many of us have been fortunate enough to have shared a meal of trout with the McCaffreys.
Hugh and Kathy shared a strong sense of family responsibility to James, Michael, John, and Hugh. Their musical education and development were very important, and they soon began making a weekly trip to Win Bickerstaff in Napier for violin lessons for the boys.
Hugh became an active member of the Hawke’s Bay Branch in 1991. In 1992, he was elected Branch Chairperson for two years and was our Delegate on the National Executive until last year. During this time, he was also Vice President of the New Zealand Suzuki Institute.
I am sure that the children from other Suzuki families will remember Hugh with special affection as the story reader at summer camps, always ready to play cricket, soccer, or the like with any team that needed a Dad to be part of the action. Hugh had an affinity with children—there were some that would line up with metallic smiles at the back of his blue Holden—out would come the pliers for their plates to be adjusted. There was always a tool in the boot that could be adapted for the emergency repair of a broken bow or chinrest.
Hugh had a very strong Christian faith and was devoted to his family. He was a very forgiving person who saw the best qualities in everyone. He will be sadly missed by our branch. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Kathy, James, Michael, John, and Hugh.
